USA-Canada Youth Exchange Conference Las Vegas 2002 Facilitated Session International Exchange Student News/Rotary Exchange Student News o 5890—table 1—stay with students o give to all inbounds and outbounds o support with 5-10 dollar o try for 501c o connect with colleges o stay student-driven o editorial work—by region or subject o target market—interested, current, ROTEX o not technical articles o concerned about liability/slander/2nd-hand info o maybe need legal resources from RI o should remain independent—not connected to/run by Rotary; just links to the newsletter website o 6060— o value in having printed as well as on-line o potential as marketing tool for prospective students o needs to be regional and not necessarily only in English o include info on other Rotary programs open to youth, eg Rotary scholarships o snappy, fewer pages, easy to read o space/facility for suggestions for improvement o mission statement o editorial board/vetting process o keeping in USA/Canada as opposed to opening up o for and by students—very important o seed money from RI and/or Youth Exchange interests; then charge $1/yr subscription fee o hire ROTEX to run for 1-2 yrs o concern about using material for commercial purposes o probably should be on-line only to keep costs down o staffed by editorial group of ROTEX o meet concurrently with this conference o serve 1-2 years o maybe Rotarian sitting in o how has Rotary benefited their lives o what makes a good exchange o enhance recruitment efforts o support current inbound/outbound o forward articles to Rotarian and to other mags/media o ROTEX should be the drivers; we can stand behind o Some editing—not censorship o Format—printed, not just on-line, to increase visibility o Create a proto-type; let regional ROTEX go from there o What can we do to help Todd? o Should be student-driven o Funding—maybe small contribution from Districts o Target—add non-participating Rotary Clubs to get away from simple logistics ‘sales’ pitches o Excellent recruiting tool o Additional information on other countries where exchanges may not have been so successful o What confusion will be generated if another version/format added o Keep in English only for now o Great recruiting tool o ROTEX should remain in charge o Some behind-the-scenes from Rotarians o Possible contribution from districts o Stay in similar format o Perhaps add some ‘logistics’ on how to become an exchange student and deadlines involved o Expand to other languages o Charge subscription for those who want printed version o Target audience—teenagers o Disclaimer to the effect that it’s the collaborative effort of students o Need mechanism for succession management o Highlight a different country each month o Guest column—ask the YEO o Is this going to be political or apolitical—delicate balance between PC and too much oversight o Opportunity for rebuttal to critical/controversial articles |
